Mondovo vs Squarespace

Squarespace makes one design system very well. Mondovo makes you three designs.

Every current Squarespace site belongs to a single template family. That is why Squarespace sites so rarely look broken, and it is also the boundary on how far a design can go. For a great many businesses that trade is right. This page states it from Squarespace's own help centre, and says when to buy Squarespace instead.

The short version

Read this first, and you may not need the rest of the page.

This is the part most comparison pages bury. It is at the top here because it saves you a decision you were going to make anyway.

Choose Mondovo if

  • You are pitching, and want more than one finished direction to show.
  • The client's brand needs a look the template family will not reach.
  • You want an approval and element-level comments on a link you send, rather than a seat in your account.
  • You are running several client sites and want them in one workspace with one team.

Choose Squarespace if

  • The client will run the site themselves after launch, and you want them to be able to.
  • The look inside the 7.1 family fits the brand, and probably it does.
  • You want the design decisions bounded, because a bounded system removes a class of argument on a fixed fee.
  • They already sell through Squarespace, and moving a working store to make a website nicer is a bad trade.

What Squarespace publishes

The facts this page is built on.

Every one of these is quoted from Squarespace's own help centre. The links are at the bottom.

There are four website plans.

Each site is billed on its own.

"Billing plans apply to individual sites only. If you have more than one Squarespace site, you'll pay for each one separately, and each will have its own billing plan."

Current sites share one template family.

Read 9 September 2026

"All version 7.1 sites are part of the same template family, so every site has the same features and style options." Squarespace's guidance is that you will not change templates on a 7.1 site; you change colours, fonts and page types instead.

The help centre points at the pricing page for current figures, and we could not read them from it on the day we checked. So this page quotes no Squarespace price. Read them at the source before you build a quote on them.

Side by side.

Quoted text belongs to Squarespace. Rows are limited to things we could confirm from their published pages.

Squarespace does a great deal that is not listed here. A short table is the price of only printing what we could check.

The trade at the centre of it

One family raises the floor and sets the ceiling.

This is a deliberate product decision by Squarespace, and a good one. It is worth understanding rather than complaining about.

Consistency is the product

Every 7.1 site draws on the same style options, which is why so few Squarespace sites look broken. The floor is high, and a high floor is genuinely valuable when the person maintaining the site is not a designer.

The ceiling is where it costs you

When a client's brand needs a composition the system does not offer, the answer is to work within the system. For most businesses that is fine. For a studio selling a distinctive identity, it is the whole problem.

Mondovo moves the choice to the client

Three complete designs on the same content plan, generated for this business rather than selected from a set, so the client compares finished pages carrying their own words.

And nothing is locked afterwards

Up to ten designs can sit on one site. Making a different one live is a switch, not a rebuild, and the content, the page structure and the SEO settings do not move when the design does.

The honest part

When Squarespace is the right answer.

Squarespace is a well-made product with a decade and a half of refinement in it. There are projects where it is plainly the better buy.

The client runs it after launch

Squarespace is a product a non-technical owner can operate alone, and can hire help for anywhere. If the brief is really "give them something they can look after", that is a serious answer and you should take it seriously.

The look inside the family is good enough

For a great many businesses it is more than good enough. The shortest route to a good site is not always to generate one, and a client paying for a clean brochure site does not need three directions.

You want the design decisions bounded

A system with limits removes a class of argument. On a fixed fee, that is worth real money, and an open-ended design conversation is how fixed-fee projects lose it.

They already sell on it

Migrating a working store to make the marketing pages nicer is a bad trade. Mondovo builds catalogue pages and captures enquiries; it does not process orders, and we are not going to imply that it does.

If one of those describes the project on your desk, use Squarespace. A comparison page that could not name a case for the other side would not be worth reading.

What each one costs

Both charge per site. We can only quote one of them.

The shapes are close enough to compare directly, with one caveat we could not get around on the day we checked.

Mondovo

$20 per live site per month

Drafts are free — 50 of them on Pro — and one live site is included in the first $20. Each extra live site is another $20. Pages, visitors and form submissions are not billed. Three team members are included, then $10 a month each. White-label, API access and the outreach tools are a $99 a month add-on.

Squarespace

Per site, across four plans

Basic, Core, Plus and Advanced. "Billing plans apply to individual sites only. If you have more than one Squarespace site, you'll pay for each one separately, and each will have its own billing plan." We could not read current figures from the pricing page on the day we checked, so we quote none.

The structural difference is not the number. It is that a draft here costs nothing, so a pitch that does not convert does not appear on a bill.

Range

These came out of briefs, not out of one family.

Three sites Mondovo generated for different businesses. The point of showing them together is the distance between them.

Before you move anything

What agencies ask about this one.

Can I bring a client's existing Squarespace site across?

You can start from the address of any live site. Mondovo reads the pages and the content and rebuilds the design on top of them, and you review what it found before any design is generated. The deeper import, where pages and posts come across as structured records, is the WordPress path.

Does my client need an account to review the site?

They open a review link on desktop or mobile, click an element on the page and leave a note against it, or approve the whole site. Their comments arrive in your workspace attached to the element they were left on.

Will the design match a brand guideline?

The generated designs take direction from the brief, and you can refine any of them visually or by describing the change in words. What we will not claim is that a generated design lands a complex identity system first time; expect to refine, and budget for it.

Can it replace a Squarespace store?

No. Mondovo builds catalogue pages — a menu, a portfolio, a property list, a product catalogue — and captures enquiries against them. It does not process orders or take payments for products, and a site that sells today should stay where it sells.

Will the published site carry Mondovo branding?

No. It publishes to your client's domain with no Mondovo branding. Putting your agency's name on the review link and the client-facing screens is part of the $99 a month Agency add-on.

Can the client edit it themselves afterwards?

Yes — text and images are editable on the page, and the enquiries land in an inbox they can read. If the goal is a client who never contacts you again, be honest with yourself about which product gets you there.
