Mondovo vs Wix

On Wix, the template you pick is the template you keep.

Wix is a mature product with an app market and an enormous number of people who already know how to use it. It also has one rule that changes how an agency plans a project: a site's template cannot be changed once the site exists. This page quotes Wix's own help centre on that, and says where Wix is the better buy.

The short version

Read this first, and you may not need the rest of the page.

This is the part most comparison pages bury. It is at the top here because it saves you a decision you were going to make anyway.

Choose Mondovo if

  • You want to show a client more than one direction, and to be able to change your mind after they have seen it.
  • You are pitching, and would rather the work cost nothing until something goes live.
  • You want element-level comments and an approval on a link you send.
  • You would rather not rebuild a site in order to change how it looks.

Choose Wix if

  • A specific app in the Wix App Market does the job you need done.
  • The client will run the site themselves, and has probably used Wix before.
  • You need scheduling, services or a store built into the plan today.
  • You want a drag-and-drop canvas where you place every element by hand.

What Wix publishes

The facts this page is built on.

Every one of these is quoted from Wix's own pages. The links are at the bottom.

A site's template cannot be changed once the site exists.

"While it's not possible to switch to a different template for a site you already created, you can create as many sites as you want in your account." The help centre's route is to build a new site on the template you want, copy pages and elements across, and move the plan and the domain to it.

Wix — Plans

Wix's published prices depend on where you are.

"Prices and currency vary by location. USD prices displayed for reference only. Displayed prices are for yearly subscriptions, paid in full at the time of purchase." The page served us figures with local tax already added, so this page quotes no Wix price at all.

Wix — Plans

Wix runs an app marketplace.

The Wix App Market exists to "choose professional solutions to power your Wix website". Mondovo has no equivalent, and this page does not pretend otherwise.

Capability

Side by side.

Quoted text belongs to Wix. Rows are limited to things we could confirm from their published pages.

A dash means we could not confirm it from Wix's own published pages, so we make no claim either way.

Wix does a great deal more than seven rows can hold. These are the rows where the difference actually decides something.

The rule that shapes the project

One template per site is a planning decision, not a preference.

It is a defensible product choice, and it has a consequence you feel at the worst moment: when the client has finally seen their own words on a page and realised they wanted something else.

The design decision moves to the front

On Wix the template is chosen before the client has seen anything built with their content. That is the least informed moment in the whole project, and it is the moment the decision becomes hard to reverse.

Changing your mind means a new site

Wix's own answer is to create a new site on the template you want, copy the pages and elements over, and move the plan and domain. That is not a catastrophe. It is a day, and it is a day nobody is paying you for.

Mondovo puts the decision after the build

Three complete designs are generated from the same approved content plan, so the client chooses between finished pages carrying their own words rather than between thumbnails. Generate another round if none of them lands.

The content does not move when the design does

Because every design is built on one content plan, switching the live design does not restart the copywriting, the page structure or the SEO settings. Up to ten designs can sit on a site, and going live with a different one is a switch.

The honest part

When Wix is the right answer.

Wix has been doing this for a long time and does a lot of it well. There are projects where it is plainly the better buy.

A Wix app does the job

The App Market is a genuine advantage and Mondovo has no equivalent to offer you. If the project depends on a specific app, that settles it and the rest of this page is irrelevant.

The client already uses Wix

Familiarity is worth money. A client who can edit their own site without ringing you is a client who does not eat a Tuesday afternoon, and moving them off a tool they know has a cost you will pay in support.

You want to place things by hand

Wix's editor is a canvas with a drag-and-drop editor. If your value to the client is pixel-level composition done by hand, a generated design is the wrong starting point for you.

You need bookings or a store now

Wix's plans list scheduling, services and eCommerce. Mondovo builds catalogue pages and captures enquiries; it does not process orders, and we are not going to imply that it does.

None of that is faint praise. If one of those four describes the project on your desk, buy the thing that fits it.

What each one costs

Both charge per site. Only one of them lets you draft for free.

The structures are similar enough to compare directly, with one caveat we cannot get around.

Mondovo

$20 per live site per month

Drafts are free — 50 of them on Pro — and one live site is included in the first $20. Each extra live site is another $20. Pages, visitors and form submissions are not billed. Three team members are included, then $10 a month each. White-label, API access and the outreach tools are a $99 a month add-on.

Wix

Per site, across four premium plans

Light, Core, Business and Business Elite, plus a free plan. Wix's own note reads: "Prices and currency vary by location. USD prices displayed for reference only." The figures shown to us included local tax, so we have not quoted one — read them from the plans page where you are.

We would rather leave a gap here than print a Wix price that turns out to be wrong in your country. Check it at the source before you build a quote on it.

The thing the client chooses between

Three complete designs. One brief.

These are three directions Mondovo produced from a single beauty-studio brief. Same content plan, same pages, same offer — the composition, typography, colour and rhythm are what changed.

Before you switch anything

What agencies ask about this one.

Can I bring a client's existing Wix site across?

You can start from the address of any live site. Mondovo reads the pages and the content and rebuilds the design on top of them, and you review what it found before any design is generated. The deeper import, where pages and posts come across as structured records, is the WordPress path.

Do the three designs use the same words?

Yes, and that is the point. All three are built from one content plan you approved, so the client is choosing a design rather than choosing between three sets of invented copy.

What if the client dislikes all three?

Generate another round. Up to ten designs can live on one site, and none of it costs anything until one of them is published.

How does my client leave feedback?

Send them a review link. It works on desktop and mobile, and they click an element on the page to leave a note against it, or approve the whole site. The comments arrive in your workspace attached to the element they were left on.

Will the published site carry Mondovo branding?

No. It publishes to your client's domain with no Mondovo branding. Putting your agency's name on the review link and the client-facing screens is part of the $99 a month Agency add-on.

Is there anything like the App Market?

No, and there is no plan to build one. Forms, the enquiry inbox, per-page SEO and version history ship as part of the platform, and API access comes with the Agency add-on. If your project needs a specific third-party app, Wix is the better answer.
