Wix vs WordPress (2026): convenience or control?
Wix is a hosted builder where everything is included; WordPress is software you run and extend yourself. Here is what each really costs and who each suits.

Choose Wix if you want everything in one place: hosting, security, updates and support handled for you, and a site you can run without technical help. Choose WordPress if you want to own the software, extend it with thousands of plugins, and move it to any host. Then accept that keeping it updated and secure is your job, or a developer's. For a typical small business, Wix is simpler. For a large content site or anything unusual, WordPress is more flexible.
"WordPress" means two different things. WordPress.org is the free, open-source software you install on hosting you pay for. WordPress.com is a hosted service that runs it for you. This comparison covers both. Figures come from each company's own pages, read on 20 October 2026, in US dollars. We make Mondovo, a different website builder. It isn't part of this verdict.

Who should choose which
- Wix suits small businesses, solo owners and anyone who wants a site that runs itself, with bookings, a store and support in one bill.
- WordPress suits blogs and content-heavy sites, businesses with unusual needs a plugin can solve, and anyone who wants full ownership and the option to move hosts or hire any developer.
What each really costs
Wix's price is the plan: $17 a month billed yearly for Light, and $29 for Core if you sell or take payments. Hosting, security and updates are included.
Self-hosted WordPress's software is free, but the running costs add up, and introductory hosting prices rise sharply at renewal:
| Self-hosted WordPress cost | Typical price |
|---|---|
| Hosting, first term | $1.99–$3.99/mo (DreamHost, Hostinger, SiteGround, Bluehost) |
| Hosting at renewal | $7.99–$17.99/mo on the same entry plans |
| Domain | About $11/yr |
| Premium theme (optional) | Astra Pro: $99 the first year, then $149/yr |
| Backups (optional) | UpdraftPlus Premium from $70/yr |
| Security and backups suite (optional) | Jetpack Security: $9.95/mo the first year, then $19.95/mo |
A bare WordPress site can cost less than Wix in its first year. Once hosting renews and you add a premium theme and backups, it often costs more, before counting anyone's time spent on updates. WordPress.com sits in between: $4 a month billed yearly for Personal, $25 for Business with developer tools, and $45 for Commerce.
Winner: WordPress on the lowest possible cost. Wix for a predictable all-in price.
Ease of use
Wix is built for people who have never made a website: drag and drop, an AI builder, and nothing to install. WordPress uses a block editor that is easy for writing posts. Setting up hosting, a theme and plugins, though, and keeping them updated, takes more know-how.
Winner: Wix.
Design and flexibility
Wix has more than 2,000 templates, but you can't switch template on an existing site. A new look means building a new site. WordPress lets you change themes at any time, and the free directory alone lists more than 8,700 themes. Plugins add almost anything, from memberships to booking engines to multilingual sites.
Winner: WordPress.
SEO
Both rank fine when the content is good. Wix includes the essentials out of the box: custom titles and descriptions, a sitemap, structured data, bulk redirects, and editable robots.txt and canonicals. WordPress has a built-in sitemap. Most sites add an SEO plugin such as Yoast (over 10 million active installs) for meta tags and structured data. Redirects are typically a plugin too. On WordPress.com, the built-in SEO tools need the Premium plan or higher.
Winner: tie. Wix needs less setup, and WordPress has a deeper SEO ecosystem.
Selling online
On Wix, selling starts on Core ($29/mo). In the US, Wix Payments costs 2.9% + $0.30 per online transaction. On WordPress, WooCommerce is free and powers stores of any size. Hosting, extensions and your time are the costs. On WordPress.com, payment features carry a fee that falls with the plan, from 8% on Personal to 0% on Commerce ($45/mo).
Winner: WordPress for large or unusual stores. Wix for a simple store with less setup.
Maintenance and security
With Wix, hosting, updates and security patches are Wix's job. With self-hosted WordPress they are yours: the core, the theme and every plugin need updating, and backups are something you set up. WordPress.com takes much of that on for you.
Winner: Wix.
The verdict
For most small businesses, Wix is the easier, more predictable choice. WordPress wins on freedom, ownership and scale, if you have the time or the developer to look after it. If you like WordPress but not the upkeep, WordPress.com is the middle ground.
Not sold on either? A third option
If you are leaving WordPress because of plugin updates, but don't want to start again from a blank Wix template, Mondovo can read your existing WordPress site. It brings the pages and posts across, then generates three new designs on top of them. Hosting and security are included, and there are no plugins to update. Building is free, and a live site on your own domain is $20 a month. See moving off WordPress, Mondovo vs WordPress or Mondovo vs Wix.
Frequently asked questions
Is Wix better than WordPress?
Wix is better if you want an easy, all-in-one site with nothing to maintain. WordPress is better if you want full control, plugins and the freedom to move hosts.
Is WordPress cheaper than Wix?
Self-hosted WordPress can be cheaper in its first year, because introductory hosting starts around $2–$4 a month. Renewals ($8–$18 a month on the same entry plans), premium themes and backup tools often make it cost as much as Wix or more.
Can I switch my Wix site to WordPress?
A Wix site can't be hosted anywhere else, so moving means rebuilding it on WordPress. You copy the content across and redirect old page addresses to the new ones, so you keep the search rankings you have.
Which is better for SEO, Wix or WordPress?
Both can rank well. Wix includes the essentials with no setup. WordPress usually relies on an SEO plugin such as Yoast, which adds deeper control.
What is the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org?
WordPress.org is the free software you install on hosting you pay for, and you look after it. WordPress.com is a hosted service that runs WordPress for you, from free to $45 a month billed yearly.
