How Much Does a Web Designer Cost? Freelance and Agency Rates in 2026

Three quotes for the same site: $1,200, $4,500 and $14,000. Here's what web designers really charge, what's left out of the quote, and how to compare them.

You ask three web designers to quote for the same five-page site and get back $1,200, $4,500 and $14,000. Nobody's lying. They're quoting for different amounts of work, from different places, and only one of them mentioned that the words, the photos and next year's hosting aren't included.

The other thing that catches people: with almost every designer, you pay a deposit before you've seen anything. The first look at your own site arrives after you've committed, and changes after launch are billed by the hour.

So below are real rates for freelancers and agencies, with sources, what pushes a quote up, what's usually left out, and when a designer is worth every cent. I'll also cover the option we built Mondovo around: seeing three finished designs of your own business before you pay anyone.

The short answer

For a whole small-business site, freelancers usually charge $500 to $10,000 or more, and agencies $3,000 to $30,000 or more, according to WebFX. US agencies on Clutch charge $100 to $149 an hour, and most projects reviewed there come in under $10,000.

Hire a freelancer if you want a person to build a straightforward site and you can write the brief. Hire an agency if you need branding, strategy and someone accountable for a bigger project. Try Mondovo first if the thing that worries you is paying a deposit for a design you haven't seen: you describe your business and get three complete designs with your own content, free, and pay $20 a month only when one goes live on your own domain.

The sources: WebFX's website-cost guide and Clutch's web design pricing research, updated in September 2026. Clutch's $38,105 average sits far above the under-$10,000 most of its projects cost, so a few big ones pull it up. It also reports a typical project length of seven months.

For a sense of what's behind those hourly rates, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median pay for web developers and digital designers at $47.85 an hour ($99,520 a year) in May 2025. That's what employees earn. A freelancer or agency billing you also covers software, insurance, sales time and the weeks between projects, which is why studio rates sit well above it.

Mondovo: there's no hourly rate because nobody is billing hours. Building, redesigning and editing are free, the Free plan publishes one site on a free Mondovo address, and Pro is $20 a month for one live site on your own domain with hosting and SSL included.

What drives the price

  • Where the designer is. Clutch's averages run from under $25 an hour in India and the Philippines to $100–$149 in the US. Same skills on paper, very different invoices.
  • Custom design or a template. A designer customising a builder template takes far fewer hours than one drawing every page from scratch. That's partly why agencies working on builders average $25–$49 an hour on Clutch.
  • How many pages. A five-page brochure site and a fifty-page site with service and location pages are different jobs.
  • Features. Bookings, a shop, member areas, several languages and connections to other software all add build and testing time. Clutch's ecommerce research puts the average store project at $51,943.
  • Rounds of changes. Most quotes include a fixed number of revision rounds. A third or fourth round is often billed separately.
  • Who's managing it. At an agency you pay for a project manager, a strategist and meetings as well as the designer. That's part of what you're buying.

Mondovo: most of those hours go away. You describe the business, or paste your current site's address, and Mondovo plans the pages and builds three complete designs with your content in them. Bookings with deposits, a store, forms with an enquiry inbox, contacts and email are built in, so features don't add a line to anyone's quote. More pages don't change the price either. What it isn't is a person sitting across a table working out what your brand should be.

What's usually not in the quote

This is where a $3,000 site becomes a $5,000 one. Ask about each of these before you sign.

  • The words. Many designers expect you to supply the copy, or charge for copywriting on top. It's often the slowest part of the whole project, because it's waiting on you.
  • Photos. Stock licences or a photographer are usually extra. Your own photos of real work beat both for a local business.
  • Hosting and the domain. Often billed to you directly, and renewals jump. SiteGround StartUp is $2.99 a month for the first 12 months, then $17.99. A .com is about $11 a year at Porkbun.
  • Premium themes and plugins. On a WordPress build, a premium theme is about $30 to $70 on ThemeForest, and paid plugins can renew yearly.
  • Changes after launch. The new phone number, the price list, the extra service page. Usually billed per hour or through a retainer. WebFX puts small-business maintenance at $3,600 to $12,000 a year.

Mondovo: the plan of each page is drafted from what you told it, and you read and correct it before anything is designed, so you're not starting from a blank page or paying for a first draft. Hosting and SSL are in the $20, with no intro price that jumps at renewal. There are no themes or plugins to buy. Changes after launch are free: click the text and change it, or ask for the change in words. Your domain is a separate cost and stays registered with you.

How to compare web design quotes

  1. Put the same brief in front of everyone. List the pages, the features (booking, payments, a form) and who writes the words. Then the quotes are comparable.
  2. Ask how many design directions you'll see. Usually it's one, sometimes two, because more directions mean more of their time. Mondovo shows you three from the start.
  3. Ask how many rounds of changes are included, and what the next one costs.
  4. Ask who owns the site and the domain. The domain should be registered in your name. Get ownership of the design and files in writing.
  5. Ask what a small change costs after launch, and how quickly it gets done.
  6. Add up two years, not the first invoice. Design, plus hosting at the renewal price, plus the domain, plus maintenance or changes.

Mondovo: it's a useful benchmark even if you end up hiring someone. Build a draft for nothing, then take the design you like to a designer as a brief instead of a blank page. You'll know what you want, and their quote can be about improving it rather than starting from zero.

When hiring a web designer is worth it

A good designer earns their fee when the website is the business, or a big part of how it wins work. I'd hire one if:

  • You need a brand from scratch, not just a website. Logo, typography, tone and art direction are a person's judgement.
  • The site has to do something unusual, like a custom booking flow, a member area tied into other software, or a configurator.
  • You want someone accountable. A named person who answers for the result and handles the whole project. That's real, and it's worth paying for.
  • Nobody on your side has time to read a plan, check the wording and approve pages.

Mondovo: if none of those describe you, and you mainly need a good-looking site that says what you do and takes enquiries, you probably don't need to pay for design hours at all. Look at three Mondovo designs first and decide afterwards whether there's still a job for a designer.

It's not always either-or. Plenty of businesses hire someone for the identity and run the site on Mondovo afterwards, with the designer added as an editor. We wrote a fuller comparison in web designer vs website builder, and the full cost of a site, line by line, is in how much does a website cost.

Why we built Mondovo to show you the designs first

The thing I like least about the usual way of buying a website is the order it happens in. You pay a deposit, wait a few weeks, see one design, and only then find out whether you like it. If you don't, you're paying for another round.

Mondovo flips that order:

  • Three complete designs, free. Describe your business, or paste your current website's address, and you get a plan of the pages to check, then three finished designs with your content in them. Up to ten designs can sit on one site, and switching the live one is a click.
  • Your existing site comes with you. Paste the address and Mondovo reads your pages, text, images, logo and colours, and every old page address is redirected to the closest new page.
  • The features are already there. Bookings with deposits, an online store, forms with an enquiry inbox, contacts, email, social posts, a chat widget and an AI receptionist for phone calls.
  • No upkeep. No plugins, updates or backups to manage. Platform security is Mondovo's job, and changes don't come with an invoice.
  • One price when you go live. $20 a month for one live site on your own domain, hosting and SSL included. Three team members are included, so your designer can work in it with you.

The limits, plainly: Mondovo is a younger product than the big builders, with a smaller app ecosystem and no plugin directory, and a generated design can need refining to match a strict brand guide. That last one is where a designer is still the better call.

See three designs of your business before you pay anyone.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a web designer cost per hour?

Clutch lists US, Canadian and Australian agencies at $100 to $149 an hour, UK agencies at $50 to $99, and agencies building on Wix, WordPress, Squarespace, Webflow or Shopify at $25 to $49.

How much does a web designer cost for a small business website?

WebFX puts freelancers at $500 to $10,000 or more and agencies at $3,000 to $30,000 or more. Most projects reviewed on Clutch come in under $10,000. Add hosting, the domain, and any copywriting, photos or maintenance not in the quote.

Is it cheaper to hire a freelancer or an agency?

Usually a freelancer, often by thousands. An agency adds project management, strategy and a team, which matters for bigger or more complex projects and is overkill for a simple brochure site.

Is there an alternative to hiring a web designer?

Yes. On Mondovo you describe your business and get three complete designs with your own content, free, then pay $20 a month when one goes live on your own domain. You can also use it alongside a designer, as a brief or as the place your site lives afterwards.

What isn't included in a web design quote?

Often the copywriting, photos, hosting, domain, premium themes or plugins, and changes after launch. Ask about each one, and compare two years of costs rather than the first invoice. On Mondovo, hosting, SSL and edits are part of the $20 a month; the domain is separate.
