Microsoft 365 gives you an Outlook mailbox at your own domain (you@yourbusiness.com), with Teams and the Office apps on some plans. You sign up with Microsoft, add your domain, then add the records Microsoft shows you. Your website keeps working the whole time.
1. Sign up and add your domain
- Choose a business plan at microsoft.com/microsoft-365/business.
- In the Microsoft 365 admin center, open Settings → Domains → Add domain and enter your domain.
- Microsoft shows a verification record, a TXT record whose value starts with
MS=. Add it where your domain's DNS is managed (the company you bought it from, or Cloudflare), then click Verify.
2. Add Microsoft's email records
When Microsoft asks how to connect the domain, choose to add the DNS records yourself. It then lists the exact values for your domain. Copy each one from there; they include your domain name, so they differ for every business.
- MX: name
@, a value ending inmail.protection.outlook.com, priority0. Delete any other MX records for the main domain first. - CNAME: name
autodiscover, valueautodiscover.outlook.com. This lets Outlook find your mailbox automatically. - TXT (SPF): name
@, valuev=spf1 include:spf.protection.outlook.com -all. A domain may have only one SPF record: if one exists, addinclude:spf.protection.outlook.comto it instead.
Click Continue in the admin center. It checks each record and tells you if one is missing. Microsoft's guide: Add a domain to Microsoft 365.
Do not change these
Leave the records that point your domain to your Mondovo site (the www record and any Mondovo verification records) exactly as they are. Email records are separate and do not affect your website.
Frequently asked questions
Microsoft offers to set up the records for me. Should I let it?
Only if it asks to add records, not to change your nameservers. Moving nameservers can break your website's connection. Adding the records yourself is always safe.
How long until email works?
Usually within an hour of adding the MX record. DNS changes can take up to 72 hours everywhere.
Do I need the other records Microsoft lists?
MX, autodiscover and SPF are what email needs. The others are for Teams and device management; add them if you use those.
